HIV and AIDS

A beaded HIV and AIDS awareness ribbon from South Africa
The HIV and AIDS pandemic is now the worst epidemic in human history causing around three million deaths every year, with a further 16 thousand people being infected daily. In the developing world HIV and AIDS threaten to wipe out entire generations and decades of development.
Unlike other epidemics, HIV and AIDS hit hardest amongst the most productive part of a population: those who grow the food, work the machinery, teach and care for children. The disease is devastating entire communities, leaving old people and children to fend for themselves and decimating essential sectors including health and education.
Stop Abbott Laboratories pulling the plug on HIV medicines in Thailand
Drug company Abbott has stopped the introduction of seven new medicines in Thailand, including an essential HIV drug. This comes as a response to Thailand's decision to allow for import and production of more affordable versions of Kaletra - an HIV medicine patented by Abbott.
The Government's actions are entirely legal, fully consistent with the World Trade Organization agreements, and will drastically reduce the cost of HIV treatment.
- More than 1 million people are living with HIV in Thailand
- More than 500,000 people have already died from AIDS in Thailand
Please support the Stop AIDS Campaign's call to action by emailing Miles White, the CEO of Abbott Laboratories, and urge him to stop undermining access to life-saving medicines for people living in poverty.
