Conflict in the Democratic Republic of Congo
Thousands of people displaced by conflict in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) are still unable to return home.
- An estimated four million people dead in five years of fighting
- Around 2.5 million people made homeless
- Rape used as a systematic weapon of war
Until recently, a fragile peace had seen some people begin to return to their homes, though many more continued to remain in camps.
But renewed violence over the summer and autumn has forced some 173,000 people to flee their homes.
What Oxfam is doing
We are providing emergency assistance to people in camps in eastern DRC, and working with those returning to their villages.

- Improving basic education
- Undertaking peace building projects
- Enabling people to start making a living again
- Helping to reintegrate refugees back into their communities
Lobbying
We will continue to work at a national and international level to ensure that the people of the DRC get the support they need to return home and rebuild their lives. Oxfam is working with displaced people, and with communities returning to their villages, to provide basic services.
