China earthquake

On 12 May 2008, a devastating earthquake hit Sichuan province in China. According to government records, up to 46.24 million people were affected.

Oxfam responded immediately, providing relief supplies, public health services and counselling for survivors, reaching more than 600,000 people.

What Oxfam is doing

Three months on, Oxfam (through Oxfam Hong Kong) continues to support thousands of people in Sichuan, Gansu and Shaanxi provinces. While the relief phase is now complete, people are still in need of support and Oxfam is planning its medium- and long-term recovery work. Oxfam's five-year plan includes:
