How many tsunami projects has Oxfam Australia funded?

Oxfam Australia works with a total of 24 local oganisations in Sri Lanka and India to provide support to people affected by the tsunami. Projects include livelihoods support such as providing small loans to help people set up small roadside kiosks or shops as well as providing shelter programs to ensure that people who lost their houses now have a place to call home. Oxfam has worked on water and sanitation projects and promoted women rights.

How long does Oxfam Australia expect to be working in tsunami-affected countries?

Oxfam Australia has worked in India and Sri Lanka for decades. While our tsunami programs are scheduled to finish by the end of 2008, Oxfam Australia remains committed to working in these countries to help eradicate poverty. 

How much did Oxfam Australia’s tsunami appeal raise?

Oxfam Australia’s Indian Ocean Tsunami Appeal was the most successful ever appeal launched by the agency. In total, the generosity of the Australian public and business community helped us raise $27,777,000 for the people affected by the disaster.

How much of these funds has Oxfam Australia allocated or spent?

Every dollar donated to Oxfam Australian has been allocated to tsunami projects. By October 2007, $21,671,000 of the funds raised had been spent. Oxfam’s tsunami programs were always meant to be implemented over three to four years – until the end of 2008. That’s why some of the funds have yet to be spent. 

How many people has Oxfam helped in tsunami-affected countries?

It is always difficult to give an accurate figure of the total number of people assisted because in the emergency response phase of the operation the focus was solely on saving lives. But Oxfam estimates that its 13 affiliates, including Oxfam Australia, have helped approximately 2.3 million people since 26 December 2004.
