Oxfam Australia has been supporting poor and vulnerable communities in Vietnam since 1992. Our projects in Nghe An, Tien Giang and Dong Thap provinces include building clean water and sanitation systems, improving the livelihoods of poor farmers, tackling the problem of human trafficking and helping communities prepare for natural disasters.
Our focus
Disaster management
Frequent natural disasters, especially storms and flooding, increase the vulnerability of Vietnam's poor people. To help flood-prone communities living along the Mekong Delta, we have developed a community-based disaster management program in conjunction with Oxfam Great Britain and AusAID, the Australian Government's overseas aid program.
As part of this program we are:
- Improving early warning systems
- Constructing or repairing health centres and dykes
- Improving people's access to clean water
- Supporting income-generating activities

Clean water and sanitation
About 90 per cent of Vietnam’s poor live in ethnic minority communities in remote rural areas with few services. We are working with these communities, in conjunction with Oxfam Hong Kong and local government counterparts, to build clean water supply systems and washing facilities. Community members are trained in system maintenance and management and safe hygiene and sanitation practices. The program is aimed at improving health, reducing high levels of gastro-intestinal disease and reducing women’s workloads.
Anti-trafficking
We are working with Oxfam Quebec to reduce cross-border trafficking of women and children, particularly from ethnic minority groups in the Greater Mekong Sub-Region of Laos, Vietnam and Cambodia. The program involves supporting at-risk communities with a range of education, prevention, advocacy and intervention activities and the safe, voluntary repatriation of returnees.
