Oxfam Australia has been supporting development work in Indonesia since the 1960s. Over the years our program has expanded to support a diverse range of projects in collaboration with more than ten local partner organisations. Together, we are working to strengthen civil society, champion labour rights, raise awareness about HIV and AIDS, and support communities affected by natural disasters.

Our focus

Strengthening civil society

As part of our rights-based approach, we are seeking to help people experiencing poverty and related injustice to achieve their civil and political rights and have their voices heard. We support the International NGO Forum on Indonesian Development to promote sustainable development, equity, human rights and democracy. We also support local organisations in eastern Indonesia working with communities to identify and fight for their rights to water, food, and access to essential services.

Labour rights

Many Indonesian workers are living in poverty. Their employment can be precarious and conditions of work highly exploitative. Our labour rights work aims to help workers, particularly women, build sustainable incomes, ensure that their rights are respected and have a voice in influencing decisions which affect them. We do this by supporting local organisations to educate workers about their rights and how to obtain them, including how to organise democratic trade unions, and campaigning to influence companies to respect workers' labour rights.

HIV and AIDS

Indonesia stands at the crossroads in terms of HIV and AIDS. In 1999, less than 1,000 of its 210 million inhabitants were known to be HIV positive. But in the last few years the number of cases has soared, with the latest United Nations figures estimating that about 120,000 people in Indonesia are living with HIV and AIDS.

In collaboration with local partner organisations, we are educating secondary school students throughout Jombang about HIV and AIDS. We are also supporting a group of people living with HIV and AIDS to start a small restaurant as an income generating project and as an educational opportunity for their community.

Responding to emergencies

Indonesia has endured a tragic series of natural disasters in recent years. Oxfam moved quickly to provide life-saving assistance to people in need following the 2004 tsunami which affected Aceh, northen Sumatra and Nias Island. In 2006, we worked closely with partners and communities to respond to a major earthquake in Yogyakarta and tsunami in Pangadarang, and to the devastating floods in Jakarta in 2007. We are also working to help communities better prepare for disasters and are trialling disaster preparedness training in Bali.
