Oxfam Australia has been supporting long-term development work in China since 1975. We work in partnership with 26 local partner organisations, the Government, and community groups in three districts to improve people's access to basic services and advance the rights of poor and marginalised communities.

Our focus

China has experienced rapid economic growth in recent years and is emerging as one of the world's leading economic powers. But not everyone has benefited from the economic gains. While incomes are rising for many who live in the bigger cities, as many as 270 million people still live in extreme poverty, especially those in rural areas.

Laba community development program

In Yunnan province, southwest China, we are working in remote and mountainous areas to help people access food, water and education. As part of this program we have:

  • Supported a project to build a grain processing plant, which means that women no longer need to grind grain for household consumption. Women now have more time to spend on other activities such as food cultivation
  • Built water tanks to ensure the water remains clean. This has improved people's health, particularly children's health
  • Helped the community to rebuild the village school so children, especially girls, receive an education

Livelihoods and community development

We are working in extremely remote, poor and marginalised areas in Guizhou and Guangxi provinces to help people access basic services and develop their livelihoods. This project has included:

  • Training people in agricultural techniques and animal husbandry
  • Setting up community micro-credit co-operatives and village development funds
  • Running basic health education programs
  • Community forestry management
  • Providing clean water and sanitation infrastructure
