Oxfam News – February 2005
A few months on from the devastating tsunami in December, and there is still so much to be done to help people rebuild their lives. From the start, Oxfam was there to provide water, sanitation, food and shelter to communities affected in Sri Lanka, India and Indonesia. Our rebuilding and rehabilitation work will continue for many years, thanks to the generous support of donors like you. Find out how we are responding to the Asian tsunami on pages 6-8.
As well as detailing our response to the tsunami, this issue also explores some of our other work to improve people's lives. Read about how Marinduque Island in the Philippines has been affected by mining, and what Oxfam Community Aid Abroad is doing to help, on page 9.
Promoting women's rights continues to be a high priority for us. In Ethiopia, we are supporting education and awareness programs about women's and human rights, so as to reduce harmful traditional practices present in the Oromia region of Ethiopia.
This issue also includes updates on our work in the Pacific. In the Solomon Islands, we are helping communities to build sustainable livelihoods; in Vanuatu we are working with young people; and in Fiji, we are helping communities to speak out about their views.
Finally, this is my last issue of Oxfam News as editor. Thank you for all your feedback while I have been in this role.
