The Australian Government proposed changes to refugee policy in 2006 to allow for all asylum seekers arriving by boat to be processed offshore. The Australian Government Senate Legal and Constitutional Committee called for submissions from the Australian community regarding the proposed changes - this is our submission.
Due to the broad-based opposition to this policy from the Australian community, members of the government opposed the legislation leading the government to withdraw the bill. The rejection of this bill is a good example of how the Australian community can have a positive impact on Australian legislative processes.
